5 obstacles hindering professional development

Work that does not match your expectations and skills

We are different, we have diverse requirements, skills and talents. That is why it is so important to know yourself, your needs, your strengths and weaknesses. Doing work that does not bring us joy, does not raise our skills and does not allow us to develop innate talents, we burn out faster and fall into frustration more often. Can you imagine a person who works professionally as a flight attendant, but does not like frequent changes of places, work among people and, in addition, completely lacks language remoteness? Neither do we?. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon when it comes to work that we fall into a trap dictated by habits and schematic action, so it is worth first of all to verify your competencies. In the discovery of talents, the Gallup test, that is, a study, can be helpful CliftonStrengths, which indicates the dominant talents from a list of 34 verifiable. The top ten, which will “come to light” in the results of the survey, will tell you which career path to choose, and which work is better to bypass with a wide arc.

Unplanned action

In professional development, as in body shaping, a plan is needed. First, a plan for myself and a vision of where I want to be in a year, five or ten years. Secondly, a good plan of annual, monthly and even weekly duties at work. By planning actions, we can more easily assess how much time something will take us. Effective time management and planning the projects that await you is the best thing you can do for yourself: you then have a sense of effective control over unrelenting deadlines and, above all, a sense of self-agency - at work and beyond. So plan, write down things to do, group them into appropriate categories, dividing responsibilities into individual days of the week or time of day. You will not have the feeling that time is running through your fingers or, worse, that the project is overtaking you.

Lack of set goals

Goals drive each of us to action. It is enough to listen to the athletes who probably know best how important, next to competition, the vision of the goal is. Career goals are just as important as those in your private life — and it's not at all about making work your whole life. The point is to get as much satisfaction as possible from what you do and how you do it, and achieving your goals will bring great gratification and raise your self-esteem. By setting goals for yourself, you do not stay in place for many years, but get a real chance for professional development. The end of the year is a good time to answer the question of what you have managed to achieve at this moment and what else you need to do in the near and long term to reach your dream finish.

Fear of the new

What is new, as a rule, is unknown, and therefore causes fear, provokes evasion and a tendency to postpone decisions in time. It is not always easy to change previous habits, location or nature of work, even when we subconsciously feel that the place where we are currently is harming us more than enriching with new knowledge or professional challenges. Unfortunately, by allowing ourselves to “nurture” this fear, stagnating and inhibiting our own aspirations, we close ourselves off to the new — and probably much better for ourselves. Without change, there is no progress, remember! And anxiety usually passes quickly as soon as we get used to the new situation?

An employer who forgets the needs of employees

Can the employer hinder our professional development? Unfortunately, yes. Professional development and efficiency at work are greatly influenced by whether we have the opportunity to participate in courses that stimulate our intellect and develop outside of work, focusing on our own interests. Professional development experts agree that access to employee benefits affects the possibility of self-realization. In the Pracuj.pl report, Benefits — what motivates employees? *, we read that training is important for 70% of respondents, 62% of respondents value access to medical care, and access to a sports card was just behind the podium, because it was in fourth place. We want to feel appreciated and have a chance for self-realization, and at the same time we are aware that our health condition, access to training or language classes definitely depends on how we perceive the workplace. The wide range of benefits and a friendly work environment in which we can feel appreciated means that work is no longer just a source of income, but becomes an inspiring space for development that brings us satisfaction and fulfillment.
